Homemade Soft Breadsticks

Ingredients
  

  • 1.25 cups warm water between 100–110°F, 38–43°C
  • 2.25 teaspoons instant or active dry yeast (1 standard packet)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 3.33 cups bread flour [spooned & leveled]
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder optional

Topping

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
  • dried parsley or other favorite herb optional for sprinkling on top

Instructions
 

Dough Preparation

  • Whisk the warm water, yeast, and sugar together in the bowl of your stand mixer. Loosely cover and allow to sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy and frothy on top.
  • Add melted butter, salt, 1 cup of bread flour, and garlic powder if using. Mix on low speed for 30 seconds, then add the remaining flour and beat on medium speed until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl, about 2 minutes.
  • Keep the dough in the mixer and knead for an additional 8-10 minutes or knead by hand on a lightly floured surface.

Rising

  • Lightly grease a large bowl with oil or nonstick spray, place the dough in the bowl, cover, and allow to rise in a warm environment for 1.5–2 hours or until doubled.

Shaping

  • Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Punch down the risen dough, divide in half, and cut each half into 7 pieces. Roll each piece into a log about 8 inches long and arrange on prepared baking sheets.
  • Cover the shaped breadsticks and allow to rise until slightly puffy, about 20 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Bake for 18–19 minutes until golden brown.
  • Melt butter, stir in salt and garlic powder, then brush over the baked breadsticks.

Serving

  • Allow breadsticks to cool for a couple of minutes before serving. Sprinkle with dried parsley if desired.

Notes

Freeze baked breadsticks for up to 3 months. Thaw on the counter or in the refrigerator. Reheat as needed.
